This year it looks
certain that a new
participation record will
be set, as more than
4,000 votes have already
been recorded in just the
first seven days of
voting, as more than
50,000 SYS-CON Media
readers are estimated to
cast their votes in this
year's Readers' Choice
Awards. Highlights after
just one week's voting
are as follows.

SYS-CON Media
(www.sys-con.com), the
world's leading
i-technology media

that the first branded
blogging community,
www.blog-n-play.com (TM),
will go beta on February

The Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation - whose
watchword is 'We believe
that the world's toughest
problems can be solved -
if we work together' - is
giving $3M to help those
struck by the natural
disaster that's wreaked
such havoc in South Asia.
Amazon.com has helped
channel even more, $3.5M
- as the wider Internet
community joins the
fund-raising effort.
No sooner had we begun
our reader-driven quest
for the top twenty
software people in the
world than - by popular
acclaim, as they say -
we're going to extend the
field to choose
from...from forty to over
a hundred. Here we bring
you a sneak peek at the
sixty contenders that
we'll be adding now to
the poll, with thanks to
everyone who has
proferred suggestions.
Even 100 won't do this
subject justice, but it
will be interesting to
see how the i-Technology
community decides to rank
them, when voting on this
new, expanded group
begins in February.
SYS-CON Media today
announced further details
of the upcoming
cross-platform technology
event, Web Services Edge
2005 East - International
Web Services Conference &
Expo
(www.sys-con.com/edge),
to be held in Boston at
the Hynes Convention
Center, February 15-17,
2005. More than 3,000
i-technology
professionals are
expected to participate
this year including the
show expo floor, making
it the largest Web
Services event of the
year. The following is
the official announcement
of the keynotes,
sponsors, conference
tracks and sessions,
tutorials, and the Web
Services case studies to
be presented during this
year's three-day event.
The mood was definitely
upbeat on Thursday,
October 28, as the 45th
Annual Fort Lauderdale
International Boat Show
commenced with the
largest opening day crowd
in its history. The YV&C
staff was on hand and
spent most of their time
at Bahia Mar and Las
Olas, touring the show's
superyachts.
SYS-CON Media today
announced further details
of the 'Application
Server Shoot-Out' due to
take place at its
upcoming cross-platform
technology event, Web
Services Edge 2005 East -
International Web
Services Conference &
Expo
(www.sys-con.com/edge) -
in which leading
application server
providers are expected to
participate. The
Shoot-Out, with a
particular focus on
interoperability,
resiliency, security, and
ease-of-use in terms of
development, deployment,
and management, will be
staged under the auspices
of Burton Group; Web
Services Edge 2005 East
is to be held in Boston
at the Hynes Convention
Center, February 15-17,
2005.
SYS-CON Media is inviting
BEA, Borland, IBM, JBoss,
JOnAS, Macromedia,
Microsoft, Oracle, Orion,
Sun, and Sybase to an
'Application Server
Shoot-Out' at the
upcoming Web Services
Edge Conference & Expo,
in Boston next February.
The shootout will be a
live competition aimed at
finding out which app
servers support the
latest WS-I standards and
how they compare in terms
of how many transactions
they can handle, how many
lines of code they
require, how they react
to simulated network and
hardware failures and a
whole range of other
metrics.
As part of an effort to
provide more
comprehensive support and
integration with .NET,
Sybase has released a new
development tool that
works in any .NET
environment.
Everyone knows the
classic milestones - 6
billion documents
searched in nanoseconds,
plus the inevitable
admission of 'to google'
into the dictionary, for
example - but Google has
just passed another one:
it's made it from the
'Technology' section of
the New York Times to the
'Fashion & Style'
section.
Googling-as-lifestyle
pieces can be expected to
proliferate worldwide
from now on.

(August 6, 2002) - At its
TechWave 2002 conference
in San Diego, Sybase,
Inc., announced
availability of the beta
version of Sybase
PowerBuilder 9.0. This
updated version of
Sybase's industry-leading
rapid application
development (RAD) tool
incorporates new features
- including XML, Java
Server Pages, and
third-party application
server support - that
allow developers to build
for, and deploy into,
multi-architectural
environments such as
distributed, Web, and
client-server.
PowerBuilder Developer's
Resource released PBDelta
V4.0.4, with new
command-line features to
make integration easier
with source control. PBDR
also fixed a bug and was
rebuilt using PB 9.0.1.
Techno-kitten.com
released version 2.2.06
of PBL Peeper with new
features including
command-line parameters
for target and workspace
files, XP style interface
support, wrap text option
for script/portion
display, copy contents on

and a script processor to
synchronize DataWindow
data sets to the
database.
(November 20, 2003) -
iAnywhere Solutions Inc.
and Intel Corporation are
working together to
further the development
of mobilized software for
SMBs. The companies
unveiled a toolkit that
will enable software
developers to deliver
applications for SMB
mobile computing and
Wi-Fi users.

(July 2, 2003) - Sybase,

Appeon 2.5 for
PowerBuilder, the first
comprehensive solution of
its kind to allow IT
departments to quickly
and easily deploy
critical client/server
applications to the Web.
This low-risk,
comprehensive solution
allows IT departments to
dramatically reduce the
time and costs associated
with bringing development
code to market.
Sybase has released
PowerBuilder 9.0, the
industry-leading rapid
application development
tool. PowerBuilder 9.0
enables developers to
build rich client
applications to meet
their mission-critical
business requirements,
and features new
capabilities for J2EE and
Microsoft .NET
environments.
8/5 - Sybase announced
the availability of the
beta version of Sybase
PowerBuilder 9.0. The new
version includes support
for XML, JavaServer
Pages, Web services, and
third-party application
servers.
With the economy down and
corporate revenues
stalled, how can
companies reinvent
themselves, live on
tighter budgets, and
thrive in the changing
markets?
7/11 - Sybase announced
that EAServer achieved
record-breaking
price-performance
results, better than BEA,
IBM, Oracle, and all
other application
servers, on a single-node
configuration in the
independent ECperf
benchmark. ECperf is the
industry-standard
benchmark that measures
the scalability and
performance of
application servers and
the Java 2 Platform,
Enterprise Edition.
San Diego - the city by
the bay - hosted TechWave
2001, August 12-16, and
by all indications the
city and Sybase did a
great job. As the Sybase
loyal fought the economic
slowdown and budget cuts
to attend the annual
gathering, Sybase
prepared a show that
harkened back to the
exciting days of old.
This year's TechWave was
a marked improvement over
the last few years.
Overall I'd have to say
that 1994 and 1995 were
the best Sybase Tools
conferences ever. Since
then their value to me
has declined, though they
were still worth the time
and money. The two areas
in which I've been
disappointed in past
years were the technical
sessions and Sybase's
inability to communicate
their vision. TechWave
2000 contrasted sharply.
