The Rise and Rise of Web Applications in the U.S.
But Web app companies need to ensure they solve real-world problems

The rise of Web applications - Web sites that replace the functions of a software program that was traditionally installed on a personal computer - is one of the hottest topics in tech. Huge numbers of Web 2.0 start-ups are competing for user attention and many observers predict the rapid growth of Web applications.

But most analysts refer to Web application growth as something that's going to happen in the future. The reality is that Web app use has already stretched far beyond early adopters and is rapidly moving into the mainstream of U.S. home computer users. A recent survey, done by Rubicon Consulting, showed that more than a third of them already use at least one Web application on a regular basis. Students are moving especially fast, with more than 50% using Web applications.

About Michael Mace
A principal at Rubicon Consulting, a leading business and marketing strategy firm for tech companies, Michael Mace is a 20-year veteran of some of the tech industry's toughest battles. He was vice president of strategic marketing at PalmSource, where he helped handset companies and wireless carriers plan new smartphone products and wireless services. Prior to that he was chief competitive officer and vice president of product planning at Palm Inc., where he led the design of the new product planning process, and led the creation of the company's long-term product road map.

Up until recently, Web applications were "connected-only" applications. Users could only use the application by connecting to the central server and all data access was done in a single place. For many years, people accepted that was the limitation of Web applications. But it isn't a l...
