Sybase Announces Unwired Enterprise Initiative

(November 20, 2003) - Sybase, Inc. has announced its Unwired Enterprise initiative, focused on solutions to help organizations effectively manage and mobilize data, and give people access to business-critical information anytime, anywhere. Sybase’s market dominance in mobile database and middleware and its expertise in data management and integration technology is empowering organizations today to achieve the potential of the Unwired Enterprise. Sybase and Intel are driving Unwired Enterprise education through developer training programs nationwide.

"Business models are literally being transformed by the ability to get vital data to the mobile workforce, enabling organizations to capitalize on new opportunities real-time," said Marty Beard, senior vice president of Corporate Development and Marketing, Sybase. "Sybase understands this market transformation and is uniquely positioned to provide the critical elements of the Unwired Enterprise today - managing valuable data and making it easily accessible."

Sybase Unwired Enterprise customers and partners alike realize the value of having real-time access to business-critical information, and the ability to deliver it to individuals at the right time and place. Leading customers, including Britannia Airway, Lyondell-CITGO Refining, Nielsen Media Research and Taisei Corporation, highlight how Sybase’s enterprise and mobile infrastructure, integration and application software solutions make organizations more efficient, more productive and able to capitalize on opportunities faster and with greater impact. Partners such as Intel provide joint opportunities to demonstrate the power of mobile enterprise solutions.

"We share a common vision with Sybase that workers can be equally productive in the office or on the road," said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president and co-general manager of Intel’s Mobile Platforms Group. "Combined with Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology’s outstanding performance and enabling of wireless connectivity with long battery life in sleek mobile PCs, Sybase Unwired Enterprise solutions focus on making information access faster and more convenient, significant factors in fueling the adoption of mobile enterprise solutions."

"A real-time enterprise unlocks, shares and leverages information throughout an organization to compete more effectively by taking time out of critical business processes," said David Flint, Research Director, Gartner Research. "Enterprise architecture that includes mobility is essential to the real-time enterprise."

LogicaCMG leveraged Sybase technology to create a flexible mobile employee information system for Britannia Airways’ cabin crews and pilots. The application provides more than 2,300 airline employees with access to crew rosters, passenger information, air traffic control notices, safety notices, updated destination details and duty free sales information using a Wi-Fi network in the airport crew rooms prior to take-off. As a result of this deployment, Britannia Airways has saved £500,000 per year by automating paper-based workflow processes.

Sybase partner SAT Corporation developed a mobile workflow management application for Lyondell-CITGO Refining, which is a joint venture between Lyondell Chemical and CITGO Petroleum and is one of the largest refiners of heavy crude oil in the United States. Leveraging Sybase technology, SAT’s IntelaTrac software enables field operators using an RFID asset identification system integrated in a handheld computer running on a wireless LAN to improve key performance indicators. As a result of this mobile solution, Lyondell-Citgo Refining has reduced the cost of maintenance work orders by 30 percent and cut the time between equipment failures by more than half in several of the process units where the system is deployed.

Nielsen Media Research uses Sybase Unwired Enterprise technology to unlock the value of data, analyzing and providing information about television viewing trends for the television media industry. Sybase helps Nielsen Media Research subscribers to determine which television programs provide the most valuable advertising opportunities through analysis of data stored on a multi-terabyte database. Thanks to the extreme efficiency of Sybase’s data management solutions, Nielsen is also able to achieve significant savings on disk storage costs for such a large database.

Taisei Corporation, one of Japan’s leading construction firms, uses Sybase technology to integrate information for their company-wide business portal, securely linking the company’s accounting, finance, sales, and electronic procurement operations; work-site computer systems; document generation systems; workflow; and Web-based groupware. This high-traffic portal, supporting over 20,000 users, makes the information from multiple business units readily available to any authorized user, helping to reduce operations and administrative costs.
