Sybase and iPhone in the Enterprise

I am always on the lookout for proof points to my thoughts on Enterprise Mobility and I was happy to find a great piece of coverage from Eric Lai of ComputerWorld that appeared last week. He wrote a Q&A with John Chen and was able to share some great insight, with regard to Sybase and iPhone in the Enterprise. John also shared his thoughts on the future of the “Unwired Enterprise”.

Cloud Expo and The End of Tech Recession

Cloud Expo is the new PC Expo, Comdex or InternetWorld, and will be the next global IT event for the decade starting with 2010. This year's West Coast conference had 1,700 pre-registered delegates on the Friday before the conference opened. More than 500 additional registrations came in over the weekend and on-site registrations, which brought the number of delegates who registered and attended for the conference to roughly 2,250, more than double a year ago. As far as the expo floor goes, out of 50 sponsors and exhibitors, 46 companies confirmed during the conference that they will participate in the 2010 Cloud Computing Expo at the same or higher level. Most exhibitors on the expo floor highlighted the quality of the leads they got from the conference, which is due to the fact that we had no free expo option on the registration page. I personally believe Cloud Computing Expo had the most qualified audience of any technology event in recent years.

Hot Event in Santa Clara Becomes Cool with the iPhone

This week just saw the SYS-CON iPhone Developer Summit come to the West Coast on November 3rd. Along with the unseasonal warm weather... it was a HOT event! The sessions were well attended by a good number of professional developers etc who were eager to learn, discuss and take the iPhone to the next level...the Enterprise. SQL Anywhere Server and AJAX

AJAX has dominated the web space so extensively that it needs no introduction. Connecting to a server via XMLHttpRequest and making a partial page refresh is what makes this technique so attractive. However, use of these AJAX requests, although very attractive, can pose dangers as well. JavaScript acts as a vector to infect websites with worms, such as SAMY, using cross-site scripting, also known as CSS or XSS.

PowerBuilder 12 and .NET

Back in 2002, Sybase announced their four-phase approach toward adding .NET support to PowerBuilder. Phase 1 was the implementation of web services in PB9 and Phase 2 was the release of DataWindow.NET, which was packaged with PB 10. Phases 3 and 4 were the more significant phases. In Phase 3, Sybase added a number of .NET target types to PowerBuilder 11 and added support for calling non-visual .NET assemblies from PowerScript.

Dear Sybase User;

Please join us on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 for the next Ottawa Sybase User Group (OSUG) special event! OSUG's mission is to create a Sybase community in the National Capital area where users can share knowledge, experiences, and best practices. Users of all Sybase products, including data management, tools and mobility are welcome to attend. This meeting will feature networking opportunities, product updates and a discussion.

With the release of PowerBuilder 12 scheduled for 2010 production, Sybase will be entering the complete world of the Microsoft world with their premier development tool. This release is completely housed within the .Net Isolated Development Shell which is Microsofts answer to the Eclipse Java IDE shell from IBM. In the last meeting late last Fall, OSUG was priviledged to see some preliminary features of PB 12 direct from the engineering labs - presented by John Strano . At this special event, attendees will get to see the first full version of PB 12 ready for a complete test drive. In this meeting, Presenting PB 12 will be Mr Dave Fish from Sybase engineering - a returning presenter. OSUG members will be the first world-wide to see PB 12, get a detailed overview, demonstrations and a 1/2 day training session. To complete this historic event, attendees will be able to take a copy of PB 12 home with them at the end of the day!

The new PB 12.Net is based on the WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) features of the .Net framework that utilizes the new XAML language. For those who are planning to attend this event and are interested in a briefing technology behind the scenes of PB 12, I would like to recommend the following reading:

Part 1 (XAML): Learn about XAML and how it is used in WPF applications.
Part 2 (Layout): Learn about layout panels and how they are used to construct user interfaces.

iPhone Able to Be Adopted by Enterprise Businesses

Sybase iAnywhere Again Named a Top Mobile Middleware Leader
