Sybase PowerBuilder has remained throughout the years a bastion of application development productivity for a wide class of enterprise applications that combine heavy database orientation with a highly productive graphical user interface (GUI).
Google Latitude Hits the iPhone

Love the thought or loathe the thought, Google Latitude is now available for the iPhone in US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and I'm sure that those folks worried about privacy will be in the latter group. Google latitude runs in the iPhone's Safari Browser and can be saved as a Bookmark onto the iPhone's desktop. So updates to your location, via the iPhone, will only happen when that webpage is opened on the device (as there are no user background tasks in the iPhoneOS). Updating schemes are different for other supported devices such as Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Android etc.

OSUG's mission is to create a Sybase community in the National Capital area where users can share knowledge, experiences, and best practices. Users of all Sybase products, including data management, tools and mobility are welcome to attend. This meeting will feature networking opportunities, product updates and a discussion.

With the release of PowerBuilder 12 scheduled for 2010 production, Sybase will be entering the complete world of the Microsoft world with their premier development tool. This release is completely housed within the .Net Isolated Development Shell which is Microsofts answer to the Eclipse Java IDE shell from IBM. In the last meeting late last Fall, OSUG was priviledged to see some preliminary features of PB 12 direct from the engineering labs - presented by John Strano . At this special event, attendees will get to see the first full version of PB 12 ready for a complete test drive. In this meeting, Presenting PB 12 will be Mr Dave Fish from Sybase engineering - a returning presenter. OSUG members will be the first world-wide to see PB 12, get a detailed overview, demonstrations and a 1/2 day training session. To complete this historic event, attendees will be able to take a copy of PB 12 home with them at the end of the day!

The new PB 12.Net is based on the WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) features of the .Net framework that utilizes the new XAML language. For those who are planning to attend this event and are interested in a briefing technology behind the scenes of PB 12, I would like to recommend the following reading:

Part 1 (XAML): Learn about XAML and how it is used in WPF applications.

Part 2 (Layout): Learn about layout panels and how they are used to construct user interfaces.

Part 3 (Data binding): Learn how WPF data binding works and how it can be used.

Part 4 (Data templates and triggers): Learn how data templates and triggers work and how they can be used.

Part 5 (Styles): Learn about how UIs can be styled in WPF.

The OSUG May 6, 2009 meeting will be held in Ottawa at Constitution Square in the double Board Room (down the hallway from the Queen's University MBA lecture theatre).
SAP & Sybase: Transforming Today's Mobile Workforce

In the last 6 months at least, I have been blogging on many topics but with one central theme, I believe mobility is key to enterprise companies, not only now but for their future. This is especially true in the current economic climate, where cost effectiveness, rapid decisions, streamlining processes and return on investment is crucial. Let me expand on that further...

PowerBuilder with FusionCharts

Back in August of 2007, I wrote an article entitled "Dynamically Generating Next-Generation Charts from PowerBuilder DataWindows" that demonstrated one method of dynamically generating Flash charts from within a PowerBuilder application. I was primarily writing that from the perspective of writing standard client/server applications. PowerBuilder 11 was just freshly released, and so while the option of creating WebForm applications that incorporated the technology was a factor that was being considered, it wasn’t part of the sample at that time.

Where Are RIA Technologies Headed in 2008?

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning: 'Because they can only give you answers.' Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered. From that, readers can themselves infer: where is AJAX headed next?

The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing. Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we identified back in January of this year, to 250 - testimony, if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.

PBDJ Blogger Chris Pollach Reaches 150,000 Reader Mark

I just wanted to acknowledge the tremendous increase in the amount of Blog activity that I have received over the past year. I think (and hope) that this is because many Sybase professionals out there have come to visit my site for latest information on the Sybase scene. Since I started my Blog in August of 2005 I have seen a steady increase in unique visits to my site. This whole Blog experience of course is Reed Shilt's fault. Reed is the development manager for PocketBuilder and started the whole thing off by opening his own Blog within PBDJ, then sending me an invitation to join him in this new venue. At that point in time, Blogging was a whole new experience for me and in fact, I had not even heard the term until I received Reed's email.

This year TechWave 2007 took place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Officially the only thing going on Sunday was conference registration. However, there is a private TeamSybase/Sybase reception on Sunday evening where, among other things, new TeamSybase members are inducted. This year we added one new member: Roland Smith.

EAServer 6.1 .NET Client Support

The EAServer .NET client is one of the most important features in EAServer 6.1. This new feature enables .NET to communicate with EAServer components using IIOP. It provides underlying marshaling support for PowerBuilder's WinForm applications with EAServer and it's also a way to interoperate between .NET and J2EE distributed objects.

Using FOP to Handle Formatting of Large Text Blocks in DataWindow Output

It's been the bane of PowerBuilder development since day one. You have a DataWindow that contains one or more text blocks that, when previewed for printing or printed, span a page boundary. The result: the DataWindow incorrectly handles portions of the text. You may find some text on the first page that is repeated on the next page, or some text may be missing entirely, or the text may end up overwriting subsequent report objects. The bottom line is that the results are unusable, and it often takes a great deal of tweaking to get adequate results. The good news is that I found at least one method of addressing the issue. The bad news is that the path to get there was rather convoluted. This article describes both.
